The Downstairs Maid by Rosie Clarke

This is a moving novel that talks about Emily who lives in a small town with his father and mother. His father works in his farm and whenever he can he buy things in the market, to sell them himself. Most of them are not useful at all and his wife is constantly mad at him because when they married he promised her luxurious things and a wealthy life when his uncle would die but that never happened. Em has also an uncle, Derek that terrifies her since he actually wants her as a woman.
Emily wants to be someone some day and when his father buys a shop she starts dreaming about her future. But his beloved father need some meds and they cannot afford them.

So when Emily is given the choice to be a servant of a rich family she accepts. She soon discover that she's very fond of one of the sons of the Lord called Nicholas, but she was a servant and he wasn't so she give up that idea without knowing that he has the same feelings for her. When she thinks that evrything is going to work out for her and his father, he dies. She has never had a goos realtion with her mother so it's no surprise they don't talk anymore, besides his uncle now lives with her and she made a promise not to come near him.
But her bad luck doesn't end there. His father has an employee that got badly injured during the war so she marry him to take care of him even if she is in love with Nicholas. When she starts thinking that she will spend the rest of her life with her husband and actually be happy, his husband dies, forcing her to restart again. She discovered that her mother is not caring his  half little brother she decides to help her mother to run the pub she has. Until one day in which her mother dissapear leaving her alone with her brother and without money.

In that moment of desesperation, Nicholas comes from the war, asking her to marry him and she accept and marry him before he has to come back. But his family don't see with good eyes that Nicholas has married someone of a different station. Emily and the baby she's expecting are left alone when he has to attend his duty. Her beloved Nicholas get injured this time and doesn't want to see anybody because he thinks he looks like a monster now. At the end evrything turns out well for everyone in the manor with Emily's help and light.
