This is a historical novel that tries to show the readers Elizabeth I's reign. However, the story doesn't begin with the beginning of her reign but with our queen in her forties. There are chapters that are written as if the queem herself tell us the story, how Philip II tried to make England catholic again, the Armada's episodes etc and others as if it was her cousin Leticia who tells us her version of the story. Leticia was the wife of Robert Dudley the only man the queen loved. But apart from the main historical moments the novel focus in Dudley's step-son who tries to find his way to the court of Elizabeth. The queen cannot help relying on him because all the people she trusts died.
He takes advantage on this and want to make everything his own way not matter if he disobeys the queen's authority on the way. Elizabeth tries to oversee his faults but at the end she must take a decision that ends with the future of Dudley's heir.
The novel isn't hard to read but it has 700 pages and there are historical episodes that are explained to detail which is not necesary and the reader could find it tiring. You wish there would be any reference of the begining of this queen's life and reign.
